Four weeks ahead

Asked what the first-visit evaluation involves, and booked it Checked every vaccination against the date it was given Confirmed the facility's bordetella window — 6 or 12 months Booked any vaccine renewals, allowing the required days before arrival

Two weeks ahead

Requested a full vaccination history from the vet, not a summary Sent the records to the facility and had them confirmed Counted out medication — stay length plus two spare days Checked who administers medication, and whether anyone is on site overnight Confirmed what may and may not be brought

The week before

Portioned food into labelled bags, one per meal Written down routine, quirks and anxieties for staff Confirmed drop-off and pickup times, and holiday hours Given the facility two contact numbers Told your vet the pet will be boarding, in case they're called

Packed

Food, pre-portioned and labelled Medication in original packaging, with written instructions Collar with current tags Leash or harness, labelled Vaccination records — printed as well as emailed Any permitted comfort item (ask first — soft bedding is often refused) For cats: preferred litter if yours is particular For small pets and reptiles: enclosure, substrate, husbandry notes

Drop-off day

Fed lightly, or as advised Exercised beforehand Paperwork in hand Pickup time confirmed, and what happens if delayed Brief goodbye
